Roof Repair and Replacement in Indian Hill, Ohio

Repair and Replacement for Large, Complex Roofs

GAF Certified Plus | Owens Corning Preferred | FORTIFIED Contractor

Large roofs, long valleys, more transitions

Indian Hill covers almost 19 square miles with only about 2,200 homes, so lots are large and houses vary a lot: older farmhouses, mid-century homes and large custom houses built over the last few decades. The roofs that come with them are often big and complicated, with several slopes, long valleys, multiple chimneys and wings added at different times. Plenty of those roofs are asphalt shingle, and a well-built shingle roof is a sound choice on them. This page is about doing that work properly on a large, complex roof. If you are considering composite slate or shake instead, we cover that on a separate page.

Size changes the math on repairs. On a large roof, one failing detail can be repaired without touching the rest, and that is often the right call. We locate the source first, because water on a big roof can travel a long way along the deck before it shows inside.

Valleys carry a lot of water. A long valley that drains two large planes handles far more water than a valley on a small house. We look at the valley method, the condition of the metal or shingles in it, and whether debris is collecting. Valleys get ice barrier on a replacement.

Mixed slopes need different handling. Low-slope sections, such as a porch or a connector between wings, may be too flat for shingles. Where a section is below the manufacturer’s minimum slope for shingles, it needs a different roofing material, and we will say so rather than shingle it and hope.

Multiple chimneys, multiple flashing jobs. Each chimney needs its own step flashing, counterflashing and possibly a cricket. On older chimneys, the masonry condition matters as much as the metal.

Trees and shade. Wooded lots mean leaves in valleys and gutters, and shaded sections stay damp longer, which encourages moss and algae. Algae-resistant shingles and regular gutter cleaning help; trimming branches back from the roof helps more.

Staging and protection. On a big property, we plan where materials and the dumpster go, protect landscaping and drives, and keep the work area tidy each day.

Riley Roof & Exteriors

Why Choose Riley Roof & Exteriors for Your Roof?

Riley Roof & Exteriors is owned by Justin Riley, whose family has worked in building products for three generations; his grandfather managed Roofing Distributing in Oakley. We are a GAF Certified Plus Contractor, an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor and a BRAVA Certified Installer. On a large shingle roof, the system you pick sets our workmanship term: 15 years on GAF Timberline UHDZ or 10 on Timberline HDZ under Silver Pledge, 10 on an Owens Corning Preferred roof, 5 on a basic install, per the written agreement. Manufacturer coverage is separate.

Asphalt or BRAVA?

Premium architectural shingles, such as GAF Timberline UHDZ, suit many Indian Hill homes and cost far less than specialty materials. BRAVA composite shake or slate gives a different look, at a higher cost, and needs its own installation details. We quote either honestly; see our composite shake page if that is the look you want.

Indian Hill FAQs

Water is coming in far from where the roof looks damaged. Why?

On a large roof, water can enter at one point, run along the top of the deck or a rafter, and drip out somewhere else entirely. That is why we trace leaks from the attic side when we can, and check flashing uphill of the stain. Guessing from the ceiling stain alone often leads to a repair in the wrong place.

Part of my roof is almost flat. Can it get shingles too?

Only if it meets the shingle manufacturer’s minimum slope, and then with the right underlayment. Below that slope, shingles are not designed to shed water, and that section should get a low-slope membrane instead. Mixing the two is normal on complex roofs, as long as the transition between them is flashed properly. We will identify any such sections during the inspection.

How do you protect the property during a large tear-off?

We plan the job around the site before it starts: where the dumpster sits, how materials get to the roof, which beds and drives need cover, and which areas stay off limits. Tarps and plywood protect landscaping and hard surfaces, and the crew cleans up and runs a magnet for nails daily. We walk the property with you at the end.
