Brick, chimneys and roof planes
Montgomery is one of the older settlements in Hamilton County, but most of its houses were built after it grew into a suburb from the 1960s on. Many are brick or partly brick, and many are custom designs with several roof planes. On those houses, the shingles are rarely the first thing to fail. The masonry joints are. Chimneys, brick sidewalls and stone fronts all meet the roof at a flashing detail, and if that detail was done with caulk instead of metal, it will leak. That is where we start every Montgomery inspection.
Counterflashing belongs in the mortar joint. Where a roof meets brick, the right detail is step flashing under each shingle course with a counterflashing set into a cut mortar joint over it. A common shortcut is a strip of metal surface-mounted to the brick face with sealant. It looks fine at first and then lets water in as the sealant ages.
Chimneys collect water and debris. The uphill side of a wide chimney catches everything coming down the roof. A cricket, a small peaked roof behind the chimney, sends that water around it. Whether a cricket is needed depends on the chimney width and roof slope; we tell you which applies.
Multiple roof planes mean more valleys and hips. Custom homes often have several intersecting roof sections. Every valley needs the right underlayment and a consistent valley method, and every hip and ridge needs the right cap shingle.
Appearance matters on these houses. With brick and stone, the shingle color and profile change how the whole house looks. We bring samples and suggest options that suit the masonry, rather than picking from a single stock color.
Old repairs tell a story. We often find a tar patch at a chimney or a run of caulk along a wall. Those patches tell us where water has already been getting in, and we check the decking under them during a replacement.

Montgomery FAQs
Should the chimney be repointed before the new roof goes on?
If the mortar is cracked or missing near the roofline, yes, or at least at the same time. New counterflashing is set into a mortar joint, and it can only be as sound as the masonry it sits in. We point out masonry problems during the inspection. Masonry repairs are typically done by a mason, and we coordinate the timing so the flashing goes in after.
My stone front meets the roof. Is that different from brick?
The idea is the same, but stone is irregular, so a counterflashing cannot simply sit in a straight mortar line. It often needs a reglet cut or a stepped detail that follows the stone. It is fussier work and should be priced as such. If someone quotes it as a simple caulked strip, ask how they plan to keep water out in ten years.
Can I match the color of my neighbors’ roofs?
You can choose any color the manufacturer offers, and we will help you pick one that works with your brick. Some neighborhoods have restrictions on roof colors or materials through an HOA or deed covenant, and those vary street by street. If your home has one, check the requirements before ordering. We can supply product names and samples for any approval.
